MCP, explained without the acronyms

Why your CRM, inbox and spreadsheet will all speak the same AI language — and what to do about it.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard plug between AI models and your tools. Before it, every AI-to-app connection was custom. Since Anthropic open-sourced it in late 2024 — with OpenAI, Google and Microsoft adopting it through 2025 — it's become the USB of the AI world.

Why a non-technical owner should care:

  • When your software advertises an MCP server, any capable AI assistant can read from and act in it — no bespoke integration project.
  • Your future agents can work across tools: read the CRM, check the calendar, draft in your email — one conversation, three systems.

Do this today: search "your-tool MCP" for your CRM, accounting and support software. What has support goes on your automation shortlist; what doesn't may be worth an email to the vendor — or a line in your next tool-selection checklist.
